What Is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a complementary therapy based on the principle that the feet can be seen as a 'map' of the body. Areas on the feet are seen as connected to corresponding areas of the body. 

 For example, the toes correspond to the head and neck, the ball of the foot to the chest and shoulders, the sole of the foot to the abdomen, and the heel to the pelvic area.

Within these larger areas, are specific smaller areas and points for particular organs and structures of the the body - these are called reflexes.

What Are the Benefits of Reflexology?

As a Reflexologist, I believe Reflexology can release blocked energies, and stimulate and restore energy flow throughout the body, activating your bodies own natural healing mechanisms and bringing the systems and organs of the body to balance.

As per my professional code of conduct, I do not diagnose, prescribe or claim to be able to cure any health condition. I can say that a major benefit of Reflexology is relaxation and stress-relief, which is about much more than a temporary feel-good factor, as stress is a major cause of mental and physical ill-health. This in itself may bring relief from a wide range of acute and chronic conditions.

I am happy to focus on the reflexes for any problem areas. eg.
  • If you have IBS I can spend more time on your digestive system, particularly the gut. 
  • If you have a cold, hayfever, or asthma, I can work the respiratory system, eg the lungs, throat, nose and sinuses, and chest lymphatics. 
  • If you are having fertility problems, PMS or peri-menopausal problems, I can focus on the reproductive system and connected areas such as the reflex for the pituitary gland which regulates our hormones. 
  • If you feel a lot of anxiety the solar plexus I'd be sure to spend time on the solar plexus reflex, and also the adrenal glands which produce adrenaline when we feel challenged and stressed. 

However, Reflexology is a holistic therapy. This means it treats the whole person, not just any prevailing symptoms. On a first session I prefer to give a thorough treatment where your body will tell me through your feet what points in your feet most need work to bring you back to balance.

Whether or not you have medical issues, it is a lovely relaxing treatment and most of us could do with a boost to our health and wellbeing. Many of us give our feet a hammering on a daily basis, and end up with sore, tired, achey feet.

Evidence for Reflexology

There is a need for more research into the benefits of Reflexology. However so far there is evidence for the following benefits:

- Reduction of headaches and migraines.
- Alleviation of sinusitis.
- Improved circulation. Increased blood flow to the feet, brain, kidneys and intestines.
- Pain reduction for all sorts of conditions and for people of all ages.
- Improved mental health, including reduction of depression and anxiety.
- Improved kidney function.
- Reduction in PMS.
- Cancer care: pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation, fatigue and/or anxiety eased for chemotherapy patients, with improved mood / emotional balance and sleep.
- Multiple Sclerosis: relieves urinary problems.
- Pregnancy and labour - shorter labor times with less analgesia.
- Post-natally - positive impact on postpartum depression, anxiety, urination and bowel movements.

Reflexology works on an individual basis, and everyone responds differently. The only way to find out whether you will find it beneficial is to try it and see.  

What Happens in a Reflexology Treatment?

You lie fully clothed on the couch in ‘recliner’ position with cushions to support your head and feet. That way you are upright enough to give me feedback or to chat, and laid back and comfortable enough to close your eyes and just drift off as you start to relax. I may put a light fleece blanket over you as well for extra warm and comfy factor! Then after a quick cleansing wipe, the whole of each foot gets stretched, massaged, and stroked using fingers, thumbs and knuckles, until it is nicely relaxed. Then thumbs and fingertips are used in a special reflexology technique to press all over the foot from toes to heels both underneath the foot and on top.

I will observe as I am working for sensitivities, sore points, blocked energies, and crystaline deposits under the skin. These areas will get particular attention. Many people are surprised when there is a reaction in a reflex that relates to an area of the body with a health issue they have forgotten to mention. Reflexology can be so relaxing you fall asleep. However, bare in mind that in some people, some reflex points may be briefly quite painful! This will subside as the reflex is worked. This tends to be followed by a wave of tension release throughout the body as the body is able to relax more deeply and come back to balance.

Reflexology Times and Prices

How Much Time, and How Often? 

An hour and a quarter session is expected on your first visit, where initial consultation may take 10 minutes or so, leaving you a good hour of treatment time.

Instead of booking a set schedule of appointments up front, I prefer to have an initial session, and then if you wish to book further treatments to discuss their length and frequency with the knowledge of you and your feet I will have gained from the session.

Eunice D. Ingham, the developer of modern Reflexology in the 1930's, recommended several short sessions a week for those in health crisis. But these days, an hour session is the Industry standard, and it is more common for Reflexologists to suggest a course of 5-6 weekly sessions, followed by a monthly 'maintainance' session. This fits better into most people's lives! But it does vary from person to person - on your needs, your budget, and your schedule.

I find that an hour session suits most people, after the initial session. For those people with many sensitive areas or very painful reflexes, I advise an hour and a 1/4 session ideal, in order for me to work the feet thoroughly but with care and time to release any discomfort and to enable full relaxation. For those with few sensitivities or problem areas who simply enjoy the wonderful relaxation of the treatment, or for those who would like a treatment to just focus on particular problem areas, 45 minutes may be sufficient. Rarely, there may be a medical reason why a shorter session is advisable.
