Hot days - cold stones and cooling oils!

Are you enjoying the sun? 🌞😎

Or feeling a bit overheated? 😩

It's a nice 21-22C here at Holistyx, between the stone walls, the window that only gets direct sun mid afternoon, and the fans on the HEPA air filters. 💙

Cold Stones

I am now offering cold stones as a £2 add-on to Swedish/Holistic Massage, Aromatherapy, or Massage and Reflexology sessions.

Marble and jade stones (pictured) are naturally cool, and I keep them in the fridge for extra coldness. They are used in the palm of the hand to massage with, or may also be placed on the body to really cool a particular area. Eg the smallest ones can be used on the forehead and temples. The larger ones might be used on the back, or the legs.

  • These can feel wonderful and be really beneficial:
  • on painful muscles
  • on injured, or inflamed areas, including arthritic joints
  • on sensitive, irritable or hot skin
  • on the face and neck to relieve congested sinuses or hayfever related inflammation
  • on areas with sluggish lymph circulation eg tired, puffy legs
  • for a menopausal woman having a hot flush

Cold stones are sometimes used as part of a Stone Therapy: Hot and Cold Stone Massage session. However through much of the year, most people prefer just the hot stones. But in this weather the cold stones come into their own!

Cooling Oils

I can also use essential oils which cool the body - either the full on menthol freshness and anti-inflammatory action of peppermint or something more subtle. This could be an uplifting citrus oil like lemon, orange, grapefruit, bergamot or petitgrain - as long as you aren't going to be in the sun afterwards - as be aware most citrus oils increase the risk of sunburn! Or lavender, geranium, chamomile, or eucalyptus are other great essential oils for cooling and calming. In terms of the base massage oil, coconut oil is the most cooling (and tips for at home - is also great as an after-sun treatment for your skin or your hair).

Peppermint is especially good for aching muscles, headaches, or itchy skin.
Lavender is perfect for sore skin (including sunburn, midge bites), stress, insomnia.
Geranium as a hormone and mood balancer is perfect for menopause, and also helps with sluggish lymph circulation.
Chamomile is a particularly potent anti-inflammatory.
Eucalyptus is great for clearing sinuses or a muggy head, and also for arthritic joints.

NB - If you are using essential oils at home - remember diffused oils can be toxic to pets, and oils for the skin should always be properly diluted. Water (eg putting them straight in your bath) doesn't dilute oil because oil and water don't mix! Ask me if you'd like to know more about using essential oils safely.

Pregnancy and Post-Natal Massage and Aromatherapy

What, no Aromatherapists around here trained for Pregnancy?

Last year, I got this message by email:
"I am currently pregnant and want to find out more about aromatherapy in pregnancy and also for labour and birth, I'd like to find out what safe and what is not and also how me and my partner can learn to use oils etc. properly, I was wondering if you would be able to help me or point me in the direction of someone who could?"
I said I would try and find someone who had training and experience in this area of work to pass her on to.

Now, I know of many professional and experienced massage therapists in Lancaster and nearby areas who are providing massage for pregnancy. But - having spent a long time searching online, and having asked other therapists, I was unable to find anyone providing Aromatherapy for pregnancy anywhere remotely near here. Also, I found an awful lot of conflicting information and advice about the safety and efficacy of different essential oils around online - not a reassuring experience for any pregnant woman looking to benefit from Aromatherapy! So, I decided I should do something about it.

There is now!

In March this year, I attended a 2 day course in London with Jo Kellet of fromtheseed in massage and Aromatherapy for pregnancy, labour and post-natal care accredited by the IFPA - the International Federation of Professional Aromatherapists. I now provide pre-natal and post-natal massage and Aromatherapy. I can't be there for the labour but I can offer some advice for you and your birth partner.

So ... if you know of anyone who is pregnant or trying for a baby, or someone who has just had a baby, who you think might be interested in the many benefits of massage and Aromatherapy - please tell them about me. :)

FHT Local Support Group Co-ordinators Meeting, CAMexpo and Training Workshops

Weekend before last (5th and 6th October) I was funded by The Federation of Holistic Therapists for a trip down to London for a meeting with other Local Support Group co-ordinators from around the UK. What a lovely bunch my fellow co-ordinators are, was lovely to meet them.

Plus what a great opportunity to hear from our professional organisation on their plans for the future, and to feedback to them what we would like to see happening in the FHT and in our growing network of Local Support Groups. As of last week we now have 108 groups which really makes us the largest network of its kind in the UK and probably Europe as well!

Here I am (front left) at dinner with other Local Support Group Co-ordinators.

More info about our local group - which is open to anyone interested in holistic health and wellbeing - at FHT Lancaster LSG. We got treated to travel, a healthy lunch, a lovely dinner (biggest helping of tiramisu I have ever seen!), and accommodation, and our meeting was timed to coincide with...

CAMexpo 2013

The UK’s only dedicated event for complementary, natural and integrated healthcare.

I made the most of the opportunity to attend on the Sunday and booked myself on 4 workshops:

Sacroiliac joint dysfunction – Assessment and treatment for the massage therapist
Trigger point therapy for low back pain
Being a massage therapist – It’s a lifestyle – not a job!
Introduction to Aromatherapy for Pregnancy

Reflexology

Reflexology is a complementary therapy based on the principle that the feet can be seen as a 'map' of the body, with reflexes - specific areas on the feet - corresponding to different parts of the body. More than just a foot rub - pressure on these reflex points aims to release tension and blocked energies, provide stress-relief, and restore flow, balance and relaxation and a sense of wellbeing throughout the whole body. An hour treatment is recommended for an initial session.

New Testimonial :)

"I started having treatments with Ceri at Holistyx because of a recurring back problem. Since that time my body has thrown up many and varied challenges which Ceri has always met with empathy, interest and skill. She always reviews my health every session and tailors my treatment to suit. In addition to managing my back better I would usually have up to 4 chest infections a year but have only had one in the last 12 months. My work is often very stressful and Ceri addresses this in my treatments too. I look forward to my treatments with Ceri and consider them to be a really good investment in maintaining my physical and mental wellbeing."

Festive Season Availability

I hope you aren't getting too stressed out by all the pressures of the season!

This week I am available as usual. Ie Monday I was at
Concept Hair and Beauty and on Thursday and Saturday afternoons I'll be at my Therapy Room in East Road (follow the links for location details and photos). I'm now fully booked tomorrow but if you fancy a massage or Reflexology de-stress on Saturday (perhaps after facing the shops!) or you'd like to treat visiting friends and family (I've had a few people request that, you lovely lot) I am available. Perhaps with some Frankincense for a festive yet deeply relaxing effect!

Next week I will be available on Friday the 23rd of Dec instead of Thurs 22nd. For urgent treatment, I would be available on Saturday 24th Dec - Christmas Eve.

Between Christmas and New Year I will be taking a week off for the first time in 6 years - really looking forward to it!

First week of January I think Concept will be shut for the Bank Holiday on Monday 2nd of January, but if you would like an appointment on that day let me know and I will check if I can do so at East Road. If you are feeling rather sluggish and worse for wear after overindulging in food and drink, I can provide a de-toxing treatment to help your liver recover, and get your pep back!

Also, as a follow up about Christmas Gift Vouchers, its not too late! If you are worried about the Christmas post, you can come and buy one from me at either of my locations on the days I am there, if you arrange a time with me to make sure I am in, as well as through the post as I detail on my webpage.

Happy Holidays / Merry Christmas and a very Healthy, Happy New Year!

Now Available on Mondays at Concept Hair and Beauty!

Concept Hair and Beauty is right in the middle of Lancaster town centre. It is at number 41 China Street, which is on the one way system round town, next to Sue Bridges Estate Agents and just round the corner from Market Street and the main shopping area.

There is a beauty room at the back of the salon which is used by beauty therapist Sonia Gilmore Tuesday to Saturdays and is now home to Holistyx on Mondays! I am available from 9am when the salon opens right through to 7.30pm.

So if you work in town, why not make an appointment to come along after work, for a bit of relaxation at the end of a hard day? A lot of people suffer from work related stress, what better way to unwind, relax, and enable yourself to enjoy your evening and cope better the next day than finishing your work day with a relaxing massage? Or perhaps, with the central location, you might even fit in a massage or reflexology treatment before work or in your lunch break?

My full range of treatments, Swedish Massage, Indian Head Massage, Aromatherapy massage and Reflexology are available. The staff at the salon do not make appointments for me, as I need to speak to you to make sure the treatment you wish to have is suitable for you, but they are happy to take your name and number and pass them on to me - for me to contact you - if you wish. Or just give me a ring on 07888 692803.

New Year, New Prices, New Discount Offers!

New prices
As I mentioned in my last blog post my prices are going up a little. Just £2 a session to cover costs, so my rates are still lower than most of the other therapists I have seen advertised in this area.
45 mins (3/4 hr) = £22, 60 mins (1 hour) = £27,
75 mins (hour and a 1/4) = £32, 90 mins (hour and a 1/2) = £37,
105 mins (hour and 3/4) = £42, 120 mins (2 hours) = £47

However, essential oils can now be added to any treatment for FREE!
I am dropping the £2.50 extra charge. They are very high quality expensive oils, which is why I was charging extra for them, but I have this box full of potent and beautiful smelling oils with a limited shelf life and the majority of my clients are not making use of this wonderful therapeutic resource. I want to be sure all of you have the opportunity to add the many physical, mental, emotional and spiritual benefits of essential oils to your treatment if you wish, without being put off by the price.

Discounts
My previous discount system of % off turned out a bit complicated to calculate and remember, so I am changing to something simpler. I've also been asked to give some discount to people who can book 3 weekly appointments, so I have. Always happy to get feedback and suggestions. :O)

Discounts For Regular Appointments
For 5 appointments pre-booked and pre-paid in cash:
an appointment once a week = £20 off the total fee
an appointment every 2 weeks = £15 off the total fee
an appointment every 3 weeks = £10 off the total fee

So, for example, if you came for an hour session once a week for 5 weeks, without the discount this would be a total cost of £135, with the weekly discount of £20 off it would cost £105.

Discounts For Recommending a Friend
£5 off your next treatment when a friend has a treatment on your recommendation.

I've updated my side bar with my 2010 prices and am going to be out and about town today to replace my leaflets with updated ones. I'll try not to miss any, but I always make sure people know the cost before making an appointment anyway.

I've also made a new banner for the top of my blog page - what do you think?
