This week I am available as usual. Ie Monday I was at Concept Hair and Beauty and on Thursday and Saturday afternoons I'll be at my Therapy Room in East Road (follow the links for location details and photos). I'm now fully booked tomorrow but if you fancy a massage or Reflexology de-stress on Saturday (perhaps after facing the shops!) or you'd like to treat visiting friends and family (I've had a few people request that, you lovely lot) I am available. Perhaps with some Frankincense for a festive yet deeply relaxing effect!

Next week I will be available on Friday the 23rd of Dec instead of Thurs 22nd. For urgent treatment, I would be available on Saturday 24th Dec - Christmas Eve.

Between Christmas and New Year I will be taking a week off for the first time in 6 years - really looking forward to it!

First week of January I think Concept will be shut for the Bank Holiday on Monday 2nd of January, but if you would like an appointment on that day let me know and I will check if I can do so at East Road. If you are feeling rather sluggish and worse for wear after overindulging in food and drink, I can provide a de-toxing treatment to help your liver recover, and get your pep back!

I am really excited about this new session, developed with a client who asked me to combine Swedish Back Massage with Indian Head Massage. I really love it! So does one of my regular clients who tried it and now has switched to this as her regular session. It costs £37 and takes an hour and a half to get your whole upper body really well worked and deeply relaxed. First you lie down on your front on the couch for deep work on whole back using both Swedish and Indian techniques, really working on any knots and areas of tension. Then you turn over (covered with a towel) for Swedish work on the upper chest/neck/shoulders, and Ayur Vedic pressure points on face and scalp. Then (with a velcroed towel wrap) you get up and sit on a chair for full head massage and hair stroking, followed by more work - Indian style - to any remaining tension or knots in the neck and shoulders and then going down the arms. Location Change - Goodbye Healing Hands, Hello 1 East Road!

Isobel Hamid of 'Healing Hands' closed down 'The Bridge Clinic' next to Skerton Bridge on the 27th May. I've been renting a room there for 2 1/2 years and have grown very at home and fond of the place and was sorry to see it go! Isobel is now at Riverway House just round the corner, with both her 'Healing Hands' practice and the 'Ultima Physio' and 'Altissima Training' parts of her work that she had been developing at Total Fitness gym before its sudden closure.

As I have been working at Concept Health and Beauty on China Street on Mondays since October last year, I initially explored the idea of using the treatment room there on my other days (Thursday and Saturday). Sonia, the Beauty Therapist who is there Tuesday to Saturday, initially thought we could work round each other, but she has become so busy lately she realised it just wouldn't work out. So, I decided to have a look around at other options and ... I have found somewhere REALLY nice!

Federation of Holistic Therapists Lancaster Local Support Group - update

Most local people will probably have heard that Total Fitness was suddenly closed a few weeks ago. That left my joint-co-ordinator, Isobel Hamid , without a venue for her training school, and us as a group without a venue for the FHT Lancaster Local Support Group. Our March and April meetings have therefore been cancelled. Isobel has got a new place at Riverway House and thanks to FHT member Sarah Bowers, Nurse Complementary Therapy Co-ordinator at the local St. John's Hospice, we have got the go-ahead to use the main lounge/ education room in the Hospice for the support group. It is on on the A6 at Beaumont Bridge - Slyne Road, Lancaster, LA2 6ST.

A Lancaster based support group for practitioners in the fields of Complementary and Holistic Health, Beauty and Sports Therapy was recently set up by myself and fellow therapist Isobel Hamid in association with the FHT (Federation of Holistic Therapists).

Monthly meetings on Mondays 7-9pm, will provide opportunities to hear talks, see demonstrations, network, and exchange information and ideas, and participate in various activities and events such as therapy swaps, training, and promotional events. The meetings are open to anyone who wishes to attend. Fee: £5.00 for FHT members and £7.00 for non-members.

Our first meeting in January had a good turn out of 27 people, mostly therapists who had been informed about the new group by the FHT; and focused on giving information about our plans and ideas for the group, getting feedback and suggestions, and general networking. Feedback forms gave universally positive feedback, that the meeting was informative, interesting, and enjoyable and that people are looking forward to future talks, events, etc. I very much enjoyed meeting everyone and got one of the types of support I had hoped for by arranging some therapy swaps for both Massage and Reflexology. Fabulous!

Our second meeting in February had a demonstration by Isobel Hamid of Cupping. By using specially heated glass jars as an aid to massage, a vacuum is created to increase blood flow and movement of body fluids, stimulate muscles and enhance internal organ function.

Our March meeting will include a talk by Shelan Holden of Women's Aid.

A Facebook group has been set up Here. Feel free to join, and share any bits of info or weblinks that you feel group members may be interested in, particularly if they are local.

Are you a therapist? - you are welcome to post a short intro about yourself and a link to your website if you wish (there is a shared document to which you may also add your weblink and which therapies you offer).

Be aware that this is an open group - everyone on Facebook can view the group and join. The group will appear in search results and all content (e.g., photos, videos and discussions) is visible to anyone viewing the group.

What do my previous clients think of my service?

I recently emailed my mailing list and asked if my clients would submit a rating/review of Holistyx to Freeindex.co.uk - a free business directory.

Having reviews helps me by giving feedback on the services I provide, showing those searching what they can expect from a treatment from me, and also improves my listing - making it appear higher in a search. I also wanted to create a testimonials page here and though I already had a few testimonials (snippets of which are on my leaflet) I wanted some new up to date ones.

Well, so far 5 people have responded with a review - all very high ratings (on average 4.93 out of 5!) and wonderful positive feedback about me and the effectiveness of my treatments which has made me feel very appreciated!

You can see the reviews over at Free Index. I think its an excellent idea to have an independant site like that provide a review function. I don't know about you, but when shopping on the net I have sometimes read a page full of glowing quotes from satisfied customers and thought "Yeah, BUT ... how do I know these are genuine customers?" This way you know I am not making it up!!

Concept Hair and Beauty is right in the middle of Lancaster town centre. It is at number 41 China Street, which is on the one way system round town, next to Sue Bridges Estate Agents and just round the corner from Market Street and the main shopping area.

There is a beauty room at the back of the salon which is used by beauty therapist Sonia Gilmore Tuesday to Saturdays and is now home to Holistyx on Mondays! I am available from 9am when the salon opens right through to 7.30pm.

So if you work in town, why not make an appointment to come along after work, for a bit of relaxation at the end of a hard day? A lot of people suffer from work related stress, what better way to unwind, relax, and enable yourself to enjoy your evening and cope better the next day than finishing your work day with a relaxing massage? I've just added a slideshow to the sidebar - what do you think? I really need to get a more up to date photograph of myself though. My hair is below my shoulders and I know people don't always recognise me from that photo! I did get my parents to take one of me in my clinic uniform with my hair all tied back the way it has to be, but I didn't like the way it came out.

I've added buttons below each blog post so you can share posts you like by email or on social networking platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Google Buzz or your own Blogger Blog. There is now also a 'share it' link in the sidebar on the right for Facebook and Twitter (scroll down a ways to find it). So far, so good. But, I also added a 'like this' gadget. Which... says that 49,331 people like my blog!!! Err, no! So, what has happened there then, I got the code straight from Facebook. I don't want to lose the function but I don't want that figure there either!

(Some time later).. I found a much cooler Facebook gadget called a 'Like Box' which includes snapshots of my most recent posts. So I am getting rid of the Facebook Badge I had in the sidebar before (which you can see in my post announcing I've joined Facebook) and I'll also get rid of the bizarre 'like this' gadget which says that 49,331 had liked my blog! But I'll leave it for a while for my readers to laugh at! Meanwhile, please go ahead and click on either 'like' if you like! ;-)

PPS Ok, I've now got rid of the very wierd malfunctioning gadget which had counted over 72 thousand people as liking my blog!!!

I have just created a facebook page. Still working out how to use it and what content I might want to put on there. My first idea is a tip of the week, for things like (these are the ideas I have had so far!) aromatherapy tips (perhaps corresponding to the season), tips on muscular-skeletal problems and prevention - eg how to avoid back problems or how to respond if your back does 'go out'- ways to look after yourself and counter stress, snippets of news from the latest research into health and wellbeing and the therapies I offer.

Vouchers

Here is a sample of my new look vouchers:

Previously my vouchers had no 'use by' date. Now, at purchase, all vouchers are given an issue date, and an expiry date exactly 12 weeks later after which point they may no longer be used. I feel 3 months gives plenty of time for an appointment to taken up.

I have made this change to avoid either a person leaving it so long to contact me to book an appointment that they are too embarrassed to do so and the voucher is wasted; or several people deciding to make use of their vouchers all at the same time, which would create a cash flow problem for me having to pay for the room hire when the money was gone months before!

I have also included a space for you to write in who the voucher is to, and who it is from.

Still wondering what to buy for Mothers Day? If you would like to get a voucher, please get in touch. Vouchers are available in amounts corresponding to treatment times, ie £22 for 45 minutes, £27 for 1 hour, etc. Or give a voucher for £10 or £15 towards a treatment. I even have envelopes printed for that special touch.

New Year, New Prices, New Discount Offers!

New prices
As I mentioned in my last blog post my prices are going up a little. Just £2 a session to cover costs, so my rates are still lower than most of the other therapists I have seen advertised in this area.
45 mins (3/4 hr) = £22, 60 mins (1 hour) = £27,
75 mins (hour and a 1/4) = £32, 90 mins (hour and a 1/2) = £37,
105 mins (hour and 3/4) = £42, 120 mins (2 hours) = £47

However, essential oils can now be added to any treatment for FREE!
I am dropping the £2.50 extra charge. They are very high quality expensive oils, which is why I was charging extra for them, but I have this box full of potent and beautiful smelling oils with a limited shelf life and the majority of my clients are not making use of this wonderful therapeutic resource. I want to be sure all of you have the opportunity to add the many physical, mental, emotional and spiritual benefits of essential oils to your treatment if you wish, without being put off by the price.

Discounts
My previous discount system of % off turned out a bit complicated to calculate and remember, so I am changing to something simpler. I've also been asked to give some discount to people who can book 3 weekly appointments, so I have. Always happy to get feedback and suggestions. :O)

Discounts For Regular Appointments
For 5 appointments pre-booked and pre-paid in cash:
an appointment once a week = £20 off the total fee
an appointment every 2 weeks = £15 off the total fee
an appointment every 3 weeks = £10 off the total fee

So, for example, if you came for an hour session once a week for 5 weeks, without the discount this would be a total cost of £135, with the weekly discount of £20 off it would cost £105.

Discounts For Recommending a Friend
£5 off your next treatment when a friend has a treatment on your recommendation.

I've updated my side bar with my 2010 prices and am going to be out and about town today to replace my leaflets with updated ones. I'll try not to miss any, but I always make sure people know the cost before making an appointment anyway.

I thought it would be useful to provide details on the location of the clinic where I hire a room -
Healing Hands, The Bridge Clinic, 14 Owen Road, Lancaster, LA1 2AR.

Here it is, marked on a map, and what the front of the shop looks like -

Can you see the skeleton in the window?!

If you've driven into Lancaster from Morecambe you might have noticed it on your left just before you cross the Lune River over Skerton Bridge.

Directions

Driving - From Morecambe is straightforward From Lancaster you just need to go over the Greyhound Bridge, circle round to your right into Morecambe Road, past Our Ladies High School and Ryelands Park, and right again into Owen Road, and there is car parking on your right, where there is a bay of shops directly opposite the clinic.

Bus - The clinic is right on a main bus route between Lancaster and Morecambe.

Walking - You can walk there over the Skerton Bridge, or the rather nicer Millenium Bridge from Quay Road which takes you straight into Lune Street, which comes out on Owen Road and the clinic is just across the road on your left.

Train - You can see the train station on the map. Either walk from there - or walk to the bus station which is just off the near side of Cable Street, and get a bus from there.

If you need any more help working out how to get there,
try using multimap. You get a choice of 4 different types of map, you can zoom in and out, and if you look at the tabs across the top, there is even an option to 'get directions' from the location of your choice!

A busy day!

I wasn't sure how successful my taster treatments would be at the Complementary Health Fair on Saturday. Well, I needn't have worried, I was rushed off my feet! I sure was tired by the end of the day, but it was wonderful to be so busy, and in a short space of time take people from feeling tense, achey, stressed, anxious, or just a bit blah, to feeling released, relaxed, or in the words of one client, 'like a different person' afterwards! My apologies to anyone who I didn't have time to give a treatment, and to anyone who would have liked to have a chat but didn't manage to catch me between tasters (which were running back to back most of the afternoon). Please feel free to give me a ring or drop me an email if you had anything you wanted to ask me, as well as for anyone who wants to make an appointment for a treatment. If you haven't got one of my leaflets with my contact details, my email is on my profile page and is Holistyx(AT)googlemail.com. Replace the (AT) with the @ sign (sharing it this way is supposed to mean I get less spam!)

The day started off quiet - I had my treatment couch set up ready and my information out for when the fair opened at 10.... but only a trickle of people through the doors at first, and other stallholders coming round or a chat. Then, my very first prospective client at 10.40, turned out to have a medical condition which meant I could not treat her without doctors permission! It was such a disappointment for both of us. She only wanted a hand or foot massage 'taster', but I had been advised by the Federation of Holistic Therapists that even when doing that, we have to stick to the same professional cautions as we do when offering a full treatment. The same happened again later with a pregnant lady. So my regrets again to both of you if you are reading.

I was surprised at how many people wanted a foot rub and a bit of reflexology from me, when there were about 4 or 5 of us offering reflexology in the room, including people on either side of my couch. I wonder if it as becuase I emphasized the foot rub part?? Saturday afternoon in town after a mornings shopping, lots of achey feet! Mind you, when I did my first client wanting the back rub part of Indian Head Massage, at 2.15, I got a crowd of people watching, and more people booked in for back or head. I was told so afterwards. I had noticed a couple of people watching but was too absorbed in what I was doing to realise how many there were!

Right, time to get ready for an appointment...

Its an opportunity to meet me, have a chat, and find out a bit more about what I do or perhaps ask any questions you may have. Then perhaps you might like to try one of my taster sessions? As a treat in itself, or as a try-out to see if you'd like to come to me for a full treatment?

I'm still working out exactly what I'll be offering. Its a public space, and I want people to feel comfortable enough to really relax - so don't worry there won't be any stripping off needed! The sessions will be about 15 minutes, of which about 10 would be the actual treatment. I am currently thinking -

1. Arms and Hands, seated, perhaps using a mix of techniques from Swedish Massage, Aromatherapy Massage, AND Indian Head Massage, with a choice of Aromatherapy oil blends.
2. Feet, using the couch - either a foot rub, or some Reflexology.
3. Back - Indian Head Massage style (which is traditionally done fully clothed) either seated leaning forward onto the couch, or lying face down on the couch, if preferred.
4. Neck and Head - either Indian Head massage style, sat up.

Welcome to the Holistyx blog! If you are visiting while there is still not much here to see yet, please bear with me as I find my way around. :O)

I've been speaking to Julia Russell about a Complementary Health Fair she and Karin Olsson are organising on behalf of, and as a fund raiser for, Lancaster Steiner School. They've held them at the Friends Meeting House before. There is a new venue this year of the Ashton Hall - the one round the back of the Town Hall not the Memorial Folly up at Williamsons Park like I initially thought! Its on Saturday 14th March, 10am-5pm, and there are going to be lots of different healing traditions and therapies represented there, taster sessions, talks, and a healthy cafe (the Steiner people do the best). I'm ringing Julia back in the morning to say YES I do want a table + chair and couch-space so I can offer tasters to people.

I am now thinking about everything I will need to take with me... good job I have a few weeks to get my head round it and a load of stuff printed... I'm not short of leaflets though, I had a thousand printed a few weeks ago - but I now need to get them stickered with my new location details and a few other bits of info that I now want to add on - like the URL of this blog!
